Jpn 342U Samurai, Kabuki, and Haiku (Japanese Literature in Translation)

Introductory survey of Japanese literature from its beginnings to the present, including such works as The Man'yoshu, The Tale of Genji, plays by Zeami and Chikamatsu, Basho's haiku, and masterpieces of modern fiction. Jpn 341U focuses on classical and medieval literature; Jpn 342U focuses on Tokugawa and modern literature. Conducted in English. This is the second course in a sequence of three: Jpn 341U, Jpn 342U, and Jpn 343, but non-sequential enrollment is acceptable.
