Ar 421 Extemporized-sung Poetry and Folk Songs of the Arabs

Reading, translating, and analyzing selected texts of extemporized-sung folk poetry (zajal) covering major genres and lyrics of folk songs composed in the vernacular Arabic; viewing videos of social occasions during which the above genres are performed; writing critical analysis of poems. Also offered for graduate-level credit as Ar 521 and may be taken only once for credit.
